Purple Cabbage & Blueberry Wellness Drink

Ingredients

For the Drink

  • ½ small purple cabbage, roughly chopped
  • 1½ cups fresh blueberries
  • 6 cups water
  • Juice of 2 lemons
  • 2–3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (optional)

Optional Flavor Enhancers

  • 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
  • Fresh mint leaves
  • Ice cubes

For Serving

  • Lemon slices
  • Fresh blueberries
  • Mint sprigs

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

Wash the purple cabbage thoroughly and chop it into large pieces. Rinse the blueberries and lemons well.

Step 2: Simmer the Cabbage

Pour the water into a large saucepan and bring it to a gentle boil. Add the chopped purple cabbage and simmer for about 15 minutes until the water develops a rich purple color.

Step 3: Add the Blueberries

Stir the blueberries into the hot cabbage mixture and continue simmering for another 5–7 minutes until the berries soften and release their juices.

Step 4: Add Ginger (Optional)

If using fresh ginger, stir it into the mixture during the final few minutes of cooking for an extra layer of flavor.

Step 5: Strain

Place a fine mesh strainer over a large bowl or pitcher and carefully pour the mixture through it, pressing gently on the fruit and cabbage to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids.

Step 6: Cool

Allow the liquid to cool to room temperature before stirring in the fresh lemon juice. The lemon juice may naturally brighten the drink’s color.

Step 7: Sweeten

Taste the drink and stir in honey or maple syrup if desired. Mix until fully dissolved.

Step 8: Chill

Transfer the drink to a pitcher or bottles and refrigerate for at least 2 hours until thoroughly chilled.

Step 9: Serve

Fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the chilled drink over the ice. Garnish with fresh blueberries, lemon slices, and mint leaves before serving.

Tips & Notes

  • Fresh blueberries provide the best flavor, but frozen blueberries also work well.
  • Add sparkling water just before serving for a refreshing fizzy version.
  • Store the drink in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Adjust the lemon juice and sweetener to match your preferred balance of tartness and sweetness.
  • For a smoother presentation, strain the liquid twice through a fine mesh sieve.

Q&A

Q: Can I use red cabbage instead of purple cabbage?
Yes. Red cabbage and purple cabbage are the same vegetable in most grocery stores and work equally well.

Q: Can I prepare this ahead of time?
Absolutely. The drink tastes even better after chilling overnight as the flavors blend together.

Q: Can I make it without sweetener?
Yes. The blueberries provide natural sweetness, so honey or maple syrup is completely optional.
