Amish White Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water (about 110°F / 45°C)
  • ⅔ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
  • 6 cups all-purpose flour

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast:
In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Stir in yeast and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the dough:
Add salt and oil. Gradually mix in flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead:
Knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise:
Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape:
Punch down dough and divide into two equal parts. Shape into loaves and place into greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
  6. Second rise:
Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes, until dough rises about 1 inch above the pans.
  7. Bake:
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25–30 minutes, until golden brown.
  8. Cool:
Remove from pans and cool on a rack before slicing.

Enjoy warm with butter or jam!
