Cream-Filled Buns

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp instant yeast
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened

For the Cream Filling

  • 2 cups milk
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Make the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add warm milk, egg, and butter. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Prepare the Cream Filling

  1. In a saucepan, heat the milk until warm but not boiling.
  2. In another bowl, whisk sugar, egg yolks, and cornstarch.
  3. Slowly pour warm milk into the egg mixture while whisking.
  4. Return everything to the saucepan and cook over medium heat until thickened.
  5. Stir in butter and vanilla. Let cool completely.

Assemble the Buns

  1. Divide dough into equal pieces and flatten slightly.
  2. Add a spoonful of cream filling in the center.
  3. Seal tightly and place seam-side down in a greased baking dish.
  4. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.

Bake

  1. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
  2. Let cool slightly.

Glaze

  1. Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  2. Drizzle over warm buns before serving.

Tips

  • Chill the cream filling before stuffing the buns for easier handling.
  • These buns taste best slightly warm.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
