Ingredients
For the Dough
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ¼ tsp instant yeast
- ¼ cup sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- ¾ cup warm milk
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
For the Cream Filling
- 2 cups milk
- ½ cup sugar
- 3 egg yolks
- 3 tbsp cornstarch
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tbsp milk
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
Make the Dough
- In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
- Add warm milk, egg, and butter. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Prepare the Cream Filling
- In a saucepan, heat the milk until warm but not boiling.
- In another bowl, whisk sugar, egg yolks, and cornstarch.
- Slowly pour warm milk into the egg mixture while whisking.
- Return everything to the saucepan and cook over medium heat until thickened.
- Stir in butter and vanilla. Let cool completely.
Assemble the Buns
- Divide dough into equal pieces and flatten slightly.
- Add a spoonful of cream filling in the center.
- Seal tightly and place seam-side down in a greased baking dish.
- Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
Bake
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly.
Glaze
- Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
- Drizzle over warm buns before serving.
Tips
- Chill the cream filling before stuffing the buns for easier handling.
- These buns taste best slightly warm.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
