Birdie Cake (Bird Seed Cake for Wild Birds)

This is a no-bake suet cake recipe that attracts birds like robins, blue tits, finches, and more.

🧂 Ingredients:

  • 250g (1 cup) lard or suet (you can also use coconut oil)
  • 300g (1¼ cups) bird seed mix (sunflower seeds, millet, cracked corn, etc.)
  • Optional add-ins:
    • Chopped nuts (unsalted)
    • Oats
    • Dried fruits (like raisins or chopped apple – no citrus or avocado)
    • Mealworms (dried)

🛠️ Equipment:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Saucepan
  • Moulds (empty yogurt pots, cupcake tins, or cookie cutters)
  • String (if hanging)

🥣 Instructions:

  1. Melt the fat
In a saucepan over low heat, gently melt the lard or suet until it’s liquid. Don’t boil it.
  2. Mix in dry ingredients
In a large bowl, mix your birdseed, oats, and any extras. Pour the melted fat over the mix and stir well.
  3. Fill moulds
Spoon the mixture into your chosen moulds. If hanging, poke a hole through the center and thread string before it sets.
  4. Chill
Let the cakes cool and harden — refrigerate for a few hours or freeze briefly.
  5. Serve!
Hang outside or place on a bird table. Watch the birds enjoy their treat!

❗ Tips & Warnings:

  • Avoid using salted or seasoned ingredients.
  • Do not include chocolate, onions, bread, or anything toxic to birds.
  • Use fresh fat — rancid fat can be harmful to birds.
