Easy Homemade White Bread Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for kneading)
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast (or active dry yeast)
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (about 110°F/45°C)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1 egg (optional, for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds (optional, for topping)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, mix the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the instant yeast on top and stir gently. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy (this step ensures the yeast is active).
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients:
    • In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Stir to mix evenly.
  3. Make the Dough:
    • Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the activated yeast mixture and the oil or melted butter.
    • Mix until the dough starts to come together. Then, knead on a lightly floured surface for 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. If it’s too sticky, add a little flour as needed.
  4. Let the Dough Rise:
    • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean cloth or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm spot for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Shape the Buns:
    • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to remove any air bubbles. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each into a round ball.
    • Place the shaped buns on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving some space between each bun.
  6. Second Rise:
    • Cover the buns with a cloth and let them rise again for about 30 minutes, or until puffed up.
  7. Optional Egg Wash:
    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). For a golden, glossy finish, beat the egg and brush it over the tops of the buns. Then sprinkle sesame seeds on top (optional).
  8. Bake the Buns:
    • Bake the buns in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Cool:
    • Let the buns cool on a wire rack before using them for burgers or serving with your favorite dishes.
