Homemade Soft Bread Rolls

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk (lukewarm)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 egg (beaten, for brushing)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir to dissolve. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Make the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture, warm milk, and melted butter. Mix until the dough begins to come together.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Add a little more flour if the dough is too sticky.
  4. Let the dough rise: Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl, turning it to coat with oil. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Shape the rolls: After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into 16 equal portions. Roll each portion into a smooth ball and place them on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each roll.
  6. Second rise: Cover the rolls with a clean towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until they have doubled in size again.
  7. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Bake the rolls: Brush the tops of the rolls with the beaten egg for a golden, glossy finish. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown on top.
  9. Cool and serve: Let the rolls cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature!
