Simple Homemade Bread Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or vegetable oil)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the yeast:
    • In a small bowl, mix the warm water with sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and stir to dissolve. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This means the yeast is activated.
  2. Mix the dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix with a spoon or your hands until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough:
    • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed.
  4. First rise:
    • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning it to coat all sides. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Shape the dough:
    • After the dough has risen, punch it down to remove air bubbles. Shape the dough into a loaf by rolling it into a rectangle and then folding the edges inward. Pinch the seam closed and place it into a greased loaf pan.
  6. Second rise:
    • Cover the loaf pan with a towel and let it rise for another 30-40 minutes, or until it has risen just above the edge of the pan.
  7. Preheat the oven:
    • While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Bake:
    • Place the loaf in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Cool and serve:
    • Let the bread cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Enjoy your homemade bread!
