Ingredients:
For the Wontons:
- 1/2 lb ground pork (or chicken)
- 1/4 cup chopped shrimp (optional)
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1/2 tsp grated ginger
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup chopped water chestnuts (optional for crunch)
- 1 egg (to bind the filling)
- Wonton wrappers (about 20-30)
For the Soup:
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 2 cups water
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1-inch piece of ginger, sliced thin
- 2-3 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- Make the Wonton Filling:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, shrimp (if using), soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, green onions, garlic, and water chestnuts. Add the egg and mix until well combined.
- Fill the Wontons:
- Lay out a wonton wrapper on a flat surface. Place a teaspoon of the filling in the center.
- Wet the edges of the wrapper with water and fold it into a triangle or a square (whichever shape you prefer). Pinch the edges tightly to seal the wonton.
- Prepare the Soup:
- In a large pot, bring the chicken broth and water to a simmer. Add soy sauce, sesame oil, and the sliced ginger. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes to infuse the flavors.
- Cook the Wontons:
- Carefully drop the prepared wontons into the simmering broth. Let them cook for about 5-7 minutes or until they float to the surface and are cooked through.
- Serve:
- Ladle the soup and wontons into bowls. Garnish with chopped green onions and a little extra sesame oil, if desired.
