Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese)
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup finely chopped green onions or chives (optional for extra flavor)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Cheese Mixture:
- In a large bowl, combine the shredded cheese, flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Mix together until well combined.
- If you’re using green onions or chives, fold them into the mixture for added flavor.
- Add Eggs and Milk:
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the beaten eggs and milk.
- Gradually pour the egg mixture into the cheese and flour mixture, stirring as you go, until a dough-like consistency forms. The dough should be sticky but easy to form into balls.
- Form the Cheese Balls:
- Scoop out small portions of the dough (about 1-2 tablespoons) and roll them into balls using your hands. Try to make them uniform in size for even frying.
- Heat the Oil:
- Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot or large skillet over medium-high heat. The oil should be hot but not smoking (around 350°F or 175°C).
- To check if the oil is hot enough, drop a small piece of dough into the oil. If it sizzles and rises to the top quickly, the oil is ready.
- Fry the Cheese Balls:
- Carefully drop the cheese balls into the hot oil, a few at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry the cheese balls for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy on all sides. Use a slotted spoon to remove the cheese balls from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Serve:
- Let the cheese balls cool slightly before serving. They are best served warm and can be enjoyed with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch, marinara, or even a spicy dipping sauce.
