Devil Crab Cream Cheese Ball

Ingredients:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 8 oz lump crab meat, drained and flaked
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce (like Tabasco, or adjust to your heat preference)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat)
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped green onion (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 1/4 cup red bell pepper, finely chopped (optional for garnish or mixing in)

For the coating (optional but recommended):

  • 1/4 cup finely chopped pecans, walnuts, or other nuts
  • Chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cream Cheese Ball Base:
In a large bowl, mix together the softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, Dijon mustard, hot sauce, lemon juice, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Use a hand mixer or spoon to combine everything until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add Crab Meat and Seasoning:
Gently fold in the lump crab meat, finely chopped red bell pepper (optional), and green onions (optional). If you like it a little cheesy, you can also fold in the shredded cheddar at this point.
  3. Shape the Mixture:
Transfer the mixture to a piece of plastic wrap or parchment paper, and carefully form it into a ball. Wrap it tightly and refrigerate for at least 2-3 hours, or ideally overnight, so it can firm up and the flavors meld together.
  4. Coat the Cheese Ball:
Once chilled, remove the cheese ball from the wrap. Roll it in your choice of finely chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts) for a crunchy coating. You can also add chopped fresh parsley if desired for a pop of color.
  5. Serve:
Serve the Devil Crab Cream Cheese Ball with crackers, toasted baguette slices, or vegetable sticks for dipping.

Tips:

  • Adjust the hot sauce to your preferred spice level. If you like it less spicy, reduce the amount or omit it altogether.
  • If you want to make it ahead of time, this can be prepared a day or two in advance. Just keep it wrapped in the fridge until ready to serve.
  • For a different flavor profile, you can also experiment with adding herbs like dill or a small bit of Old Bay seasoning, which pairs well with crab.

Enjoy this creamy, savory, and slightly spicy dip with your favorite crackers or chips!
