Ingredients:
- 1 cup of whole milk
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup of unsalted butter
- 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk and sugar.
- Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly to dissolve the sugar.
- Once the sugar is completely dissolved, bring the mixture to a simmer. Continue to cook while stirring frequently for about 30-40 minutes, or until the mixture thickens and reduces by about half. It should have a syrupy consistency.
- Add the butter and vanilla extract (if using), stirring until the butter is fully melted and incorporated.
- Remove from heat and let it cool. It will thicken more as it cools.
- Transfer to an airtight container or jar and refrigerate. It will keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
This homemade version can be used in a variety of desserts, coffee, or even in place of store-bought sweetened condensed milk.
